Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, she joined the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that the school was not suitable for her. Ford then applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. However, she already had her TV debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
